It Takes an Enchanted Village: Beck Center’s Beauty and the Beast is perfectly cast and choreographed
by James Damico

“HOW BEST TO CONVEY just how enchanting is Beck Center’s Beauty and the Beast? Maybe by sharing a critic’s infallible indicator. From the first moment of this beauteous Beauty — which depicts witchy physical transformations seamlessly segueing into a vibrantly staged, choreographed, lit and costumed evocation of a fairytale village springing to life — right through its fadeout kiss, I was so cozily caught up in the storybook proceedings that I never once looked away to make one of my obligatory, if always illegible, notes.”

“Director Fred Sternfeld has again massed dozens of performers, and again circulates them with his estimable trademark fluidity”

“Martin Cespedes’ consistently integral contributions … enliven, enrich and validate any show he choreographs”

“Larry Goodpaster’s orchestra exemplary”

“perfectly cast”

“superior production” “truly special”

“Martin Cespedes is a master of choreography … amazing what he can do with a group of performers” “ ‘Be Our Guest’ and ‘Gaston’ were absolute show stoppers!”

“Larry Goodpaster’s orchestra is excellent”

the CoolCleveland review… (12/13/05)
by Thomas Mulready

Featuring lavish costumes, stunning special effects, spot-on acting and a brilliant live orchestra, all brought together with tight-as-a-drum stage action and never-a-dull-moment pacing by crack director Fred Sternfeld, this classic tale competes directly and successfully with the popular animated version, then goes it one better.”

“The 2.5 hour play is so good natured, so entertaining, so uplifting, it flies by, even for (especially for) kids, and actually leaves you wanting more. The fun continues through 12/31.”

Audience comments …

“It was an amazing performance. My daughter sat at the edge of her seat the whole time. She told me it was the most magical night of her life and that she will never forget how Belle waved to her at the end. 🙂 Afterwards, we went to Malley’s. It was a fine mother-daughter evening that I will never forget. Please let your friends at the Beck Center know just how much we enjoyed our time there and that we are planning on returning.”

“I wanted to let you know how wonderful I felt BEAUTY & THE BEAST was at the Beck Center. You are, without a doubt, an extraordinary director. Outside of the way you choreographed the sets being changed, which was fabulous, and the great casting, staging, singing and whole production, it had some personal significance to me I wanted to share … When I was very young, I had a father who was a “Beast,” and had to be divorced, after which he drank himself to death. So I have always had difficulty with this fable, even though I was working at Disney when they first brought out the animated movie. I have since seen other productions on stage, and very fine productions, too — but always watched with an emotional barrier. Your production was the first time I was able to “get” that the Beast was actually an unfortunate guy who was slowly slipping into beastness, and it was sad. I felt compassion, and identified with the character for the first time ever when your actor said the line, “there’s so little of me left.” Suddenly, I was there. It was amazing, and now I understand the power of the fable, and the impact of the musical. So I thank you, Sir, for the personal gift of your wonderful, wonderful show.”

“Lucky enough to see Beauty and the Beast last night. It truly was magical. All those children in the audience and you could hear a pin drop. Congratulations to you and all the hard professional work everyone did.”

“We agree with all of the unanimously wonderful reviews – a smashing success in every respect – not a weak link! I do not think that it is necessarily an easy show to pull off – lots of places where just an off tone or off timing could be a real clunker. But your direction and their implementation were impeccable. Wonderful voices, acting, timing, sets, costumes, orchestra. Your direction and Martin’s choreography continue to set ever higher standards. This is not just a kid’s production, and I suspect several of your team have long and successful careers ahead of them. It was well worth the trip from the east side … A great Holiday present to the community. May you also enjoy the Holidays, and continue from success to success in the New Year – and well beyond! We will look forward to your next production.”

“My little grandgirls loved the show. They are 3 and 4 so I think everyone should take a bow for holding their interest! At three, almost everything is a distraction! Nicely done!”

“…saw your show last night and think it was spectacular. It was as professional a show, in so many ways, as anything that Cleveland has or does offer. Congratulations on a super job!!”

“We wanted to tell you that you did an amazing job. We were so impressed. This show is a tremendous undertaking and we think this is one of the best things you have ever done. Obviously you had an amazing technical staff, but this production far exceeds any professional performance we have seen. You cast it beautifully and directed it with wisdom and vision.”

“I thought Beauty and the Beast was fantastic, but not because of the special effects, or make up, or
dancing. I loved that production because behind all the “production”, there was a very convincing couple that was falling in love with each other, regardless of who or what they were. The magic that Folino and Green
created on that stage was worthy of an award. They convinced me that they truly had fallen in love with each other. I’ll admit it…I cried…all three times.”
