“Best of 2005” recap in Cleveland Scene

Exit Stage Right – Magical moments and forgettable flubs from 2005

“Fred Sternfeld’s staging of South Pacific was studded with great voices (Tom Fulton and Joan Ellison), energetic dancing (choreographed by Martin Cespedes), and lively comic performances, especially by Cheryl J. Campo as an irrepressible Bloody Mary”

Christine Howey, Cleveland Scene Theatre Critic

Excerpts from Cleveland Plain Dealer review

“you’ll never see a live South Pacific of this quality again”
“handsome enough to be a Broadway revival”

“strong performances”

“authentic time-travel experience”

“well-sung”

“pleasurable experience”

“anchored by Tom Fulton’s layered portrayal of Emile de Becque…besides a robust baritone that nails ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ and ‘This Nearly Was Mine,’ Fulton gives his character subtlety and range. Follow his despairing eyes at the Act I curtain as he watches all his hopes and dreams drive away from him in Nellie’s invisible Jeep – it’s a master class in acting”

“Joan Ellison’s clear voice and glowing looks make Nellie more small-town beauty queen than clowning hick. She’s sympathetic even as she struggles with her racism.”

“Cheryl J. Campo has a leering charm as Bloody Mary”

“Colin Cook…lovely tenor makes ‘Younger Than Springtime’ soar”

“a nostalgic rendering of a longtime favorite”

Linda Eisenstein, Cleveland Plain Dealer

Excerpts from The Cleveland Scene review

“Sternfeld’s staging magic and the buoyantly natural choreography of Martín Céspedes makes this South Pacific a worthwhile destination”

“deceptively deep musical drama”

“Director Fred Sternfeld manages to highlight the production’s many strengths”

“Maneuvering his 60-person cast around the Tri-C stage (few individuals since Hannibal have moved masses of people so deftly), Sternfeld does justice to the romance, the comedy, the incredible songs, and the underlying issue of racism that makes this work so enduringly resonant”

Christine Howey, The Cleveland Scene

Excerpts from The Cleveland Scene review

“Tom Fulton invests de Becque with a world-weary but charming sophistication as he woos naive Nellie from Arkansas, magnificently employing his hearty baritone on the love-struck ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ and later in quiet despair with ‘This Nearly Was Mine.’ “

“Fulton’s love jones is bubbling over, and his amour is so convincing that he makes their relationship work”

“Joan Ellison handles Nellie’s singing duties superbly”

“As Bloody Mary, … Cheryl J. Campo is a revelation… a thorough delight … Campo also brings fresh dimensions to her two songs, ‘Bali Ha’i’ and ‘Happy Talk’ “

“Lean Larry Nehring is a perfect Luther Billis”

“excellent chorus of men” “rousing ‘There Is Nothing Like a Dame.’ ”

Christine Howey, The Cleveland Scene

Excerpts from the Cleveland Jewish News review

“Once again, director Fred Sternfeld has gathered an awesome cast of 50 actors, only two of whom are in Actors’ Equity, and melded them into a cohesive ensemble in a thoroughly enjoyable production that exudes high quality throughout”

“Even more impressive is the fact that all the actors look their parts, including the children”

“From the first seductive strains of the haunting ‘Bali Ha’i’ in the overture to the closing reprise of the charming French ditty ‘Dites Moi,’ Richard Rodgers’s glorious score and Oscar Hammerstein’s memorable lyrics make for ‘some enchanted evening.’ ”

“Conductor Larry Goodpaster and a sizeable orchestra deliver the big band sound the music demands”

“Ben Needham’s island settings … serve the production wonderfully well”

Fran Heller, Cleveland Jewish News

Excerpts from the Cleveland Jewish News review

“Joan Ellison is full of sugar and sass as Ensign Nellie Forbush. The actress reveals a pleasing singing voice in ‘A Cockeyed Optimist’ and ‘I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair,’ which she sings in tandem with the female chorus, who do some nifty moves with towels. There’s even a shower with real running water!”

“The many scene transitions are seamless; the nonstop activity on stage keeps one’s attention from flagging during the manual set changes”

“As Emile de Becque…Tom Fulton is a fine actor who makes his love for Nellie entirely believable and charming”

“acquits himself well throughout in a demanding operatic role originally played by the great basso opera star Ezio Pinza”

Fran Heller, Cleveland Jewish News

Excerpts from the Cleveland Jewish News review
“Fulton and Ellison make the relationship between the suave, passionate, worldly older man and the naïve, unworldly, younger woman utterly ingenuous and real”
“Sternfeld’s lavish attention even to the smallest of details shines throughout. Watch the interplay between Emile and Nellie when the Frenchman introduces the hick from Little Rock, Arkansas, to cognac; how Nellie imitates Emile, who swirls and sniffs the brandy in his glass, crooking his arm in hers as they drink and fall in love”

“Enough praise cannot be heaped upon the hard-working ensemble, who move extremely well and in total sync under the watchful eye of choreographer Martin Céspedes”

Fran Heller, Cleveland Jewish News

Excerpts from the Cleveland Jewish News review
“Fifth-grader Naomi Hill and nine-year-old Ko-Rhee Lovett are delightful as Emile’s Eurasian children Ngana and Jerome. Their rendition of the delightful French ditty, ‘Dites Moi’ starts the show on a high note”

“An absolute treasure is Cheryl E. Campo as Bloody Mary”

“Campo’s facial expressions, mutating from an impish grin to sly cunning and outright indignation, speak volumes about the Tonkinese woman trying to stay one step ahead of the brash Americans. Bloody Mary’s moving renditions of ‘Bali Ha’i’ and the infectious ‘Happy Talk’ highlight the evening”

Fran Heller, Cleveland Jewish News

Excerpts from the Cleveland Jewish News review

“The lanky Larry Nehring does a comic turn as Luther Billis”

“Colin Cook … fine singing voice does ample justice to the love song ‘Younger than Springtime’ and hits home with the only song of social consciousness, ‘You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught,’ whose lyrics show that prejudice and intolerance are taught, not inborn”

“Trad A. Burns’s trick lighting turns an endless horizon of blue into a fiery crimson sunset”

“No detail is left unattended in Casey Jones’s sound design, from chirping birds in Emile’s garden to the roar of anti-aircraft above base headquarters and the static of radio operations during Emile and Cable’s undercover mission”

Fran Heller, Cleveland Jewish News

Ko-Rhee Lovett as “Jerome” and Naomi Hill as “Ngana”
Excerpts from the Cleveland Jewish News review

“Costume designer Esther Montgomery gets everything just right, from the men’s military uniforms and the women’s 1940s beachwear to Bloody Mary’s black silk pantaloons and Emile’s plantation jacket”

“Heidi Herczeg’s vocal direction elicits a strong peerless quality from the male ensemble in the marvelous number ‘There Is Nothing Like a Dame’ and from the female chorus in ‘I’m in Love with a Wonderful Guy.’

“How refreshing to see a large cast on stage, another holdover from a bygone era in today’s more cost-cutting presentations”

“The JCC artistic staff is to be commended for standing behind such a great and worthwhile production of one of America’s all-time musical classics”

Fran Heller, Cleveland Jewish News

Tom Fulton as “Emile de Becque”
ABOUT THE PLAY: Set in an island paradise during World War II, two parallel love stories are threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with a mature French planter, Emile. Nellie learns that the mother of his children was an island native and, unable to turn her back on the prejudices with which she was raised, refuses Emile’s proposal of marriage. Meanwhile, the strapping Lt. Joe Cable denies himself the fulfillment of a future with an innocent Tonkinese girl with whom he’s fallen in love out of the same fears that haunt Nellie. When Emile is recruited to accompany Joe on a dangerous mission that claims Joe’s life, Nellie realizes that life is too short not to seize her own chance for happiness, thus confronting and conquering her prejudices. The score is as breathtaking as the tropical setting – “Some Enchanted Evening,” “Bali Ha’i,” “There is Nothin’ Like a Dame,” “Younger Than Springtime” and more. South Pacific ranks among the most celebrated of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s® acclaimed musical masterpieces.

Joan Ellison as “Ensign Nellie Forbush” and Tom Fulton as “Emile de Becque”
ABOUT THIS PRODUCTION:
What do Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II, Alan Jay Lerner & Frederick Loewe, Stephen Sondheim, Jerome Kern, George & Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Schwartz, John Kander & Fred Ebb, Sheldon Harnick & Jerry Bock all have in common?
They are all Jewish songwriters who have contributed significantly to the American Musical Theater form.

The JCC Arts & Culture program is looking at presenting a series of classic musicals by Jewish songwriters over the next few years. Titled, “The Great American Broadway Songbook”, these musicals would revitalize and celebrate the unparalleled contributions to American musical theater by Jewish songwriters.

The first production in this series will be South Pacific by Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II. South Pacific is one of the greatest American Musicals. It was taken out of the living world and crystallized into theatrical form in a time capsule that, like all the great plays, will never grow old.

South Pacific is based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel “Tales of the South Pacific” by James Michener. It is the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for drama, The New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, garnering 9 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Book and Score, receiving 9 Donaldson Awards including Best Musical, Book, Lyrics and Score and ultimately as a movie winning the Academy Award.

Fred Sternfeld, director, had this to say about South Pacific – “Imagine what brought the play into existence, and what lies at the center of its theme: not the core struggle between the Americans and the Japanese, but rather the struggle within the hearts of Nellie and Joe over their racism. Both of the leading romantic characters are bigoted. In order for us to really care for them, they have to overcome their deep-seated prejudices. Do any of us really believe that these issues have been overcome since the 1940s? And yet, it is still possible to forgive and to see HOW human beings can struggle to overcome their limitations – even if those limitations are bigotry and racism. The song ‘You’ve Got to be Carefully Taught’ is a bitter attack on racial prejudice and the producers wanted to cut it from the original production because they thought it would offend the audience. Oscar Hammerstein II told them that ‘without that song you’ve got no play’ and he refused to take it out.”

In conjunction with South Pacific, Bill Rudman will be presenting a special concert highlighting the work of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. Rudman had this to say about Rodgers and Hammerstein – “they wrote stories centered in strong human values. They were socially conscious humanists and teachers in ways that resonate with Jewish cultural values. With South Pacific, they were particularly interested in the theme of intolerance — which as far as they were concerned was the heart of the matter, and why they wanted to write the piece in the first place.”
